History

Orewa Bridge Club was established in 1981 through the generosity of Miss Winsome Bach, who became its first president.

The club's first premises were in the Hallmark Building in Hilary Square, Orewa. In October 1982, it moved to the old Orewa Bowling Club building, remaining there for 20 years.

When the lease for its building could not be renewed, it was decided to build brand new premises. Rodney District Council offered the club its present site on West Hoe Road. Marion Sillick, who did so much for the club, led the design team and the club moved into its new building on the 1st October 2002, play beginning on the following day. Rodney District Council's mayor officially opened the building and dealt the first hand. The building accommodates over 24 tables and has a well-equipped kitchen.

With an initial membership of 49, numbers continued to increase, reaching 107 in 1984 and now stands at about 200.

The area north of Auckland is well served with bridge clubs and friendly rivalry between the clubs is still alive and well. The Mary Mennie Trophy is an annual team event between Orewa and Hibiscus Coast.
